Samuel G. Mohney
Photo taken 11 Feb 1864, while Sam Mohney was serving in the Co. C, 78th Reg't. PA. Volunteers during the Civil War. Samuel G. Mohney, was born 17 Oct 1839, in Armstrong County, PA. a son of Adam G. Mohney, Sr. and Maria "Catharine" Shick Mohney. He died on 14 Aug 1913, at 9:15 PM, near Mudlic, PA. He married on 26 Jul 1866, in New Bethlehem, PA, to Rebecca Shick. Samuel G. Mohney, was mustered into the U. S. Services on 16 September 1861, for a three-year term at Kittanning, PA., as a Private in Capt. John M. Brinker's Company. He and his unit were captured between Chattanooga, TN and Stevenson, AL while guarding a train and they were taken to McMinnville, but were paroled. He was wounded by gunshot in the face close to his eye in the Battle of Stones River - one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. Samuel G. kept a diary from that time on until his discharge. He had written that he had 12 pictures taken at a cost of $6.00. He sent some of them home in a letter to his sister, Anna G. on 13 Aug 1864, stating: "one was for her, one for his brother, Adam, another for his brother, Peter. And he was sending one to his sister, Elisabeth, and one to his cousins, Elisabeth Miller, and one to Christina Miller." The complete Diary and his letters are included in my book, Adam G.
